Tubu Tree

Location:

Tubu Tree Camp is built on the western side of Hunda Island, the largest area of permanently dry land in the Okavango Delta’s Jao Concession. Tubu Tree Camp is a small, intimate camp surrounded by the palatable grasses which lure many species of plains game. The synergy of the water-inundated area during the floods combined with the large stretch of dry land, affords Tubu Tree Camp the most diverse game viewing within the concession. From the water-loving lechwe to blue wildebeest of the plains, prepare to have your heart stolen.

The Camp:

Proudly erected in the authentic styles of African origin, Tubu Tree Camp is elevated into the treetop canopies on wooden daises, providing each and every guest with unprecedented views of the grasslands and floodplains from their personal sundecks. The decadent yet simple en-suite bathroom amenities end in the outdoor showers that take guests a step closer to nature.

The main areas are ideal for travellers to commune, with ample space in the dining and lounge areas. The pool, lifted on a platform, gives visitors a new angle with which to take in the environment. Here, or perhaps under peaceful shadow of a Marula tree, where the bar rests, guests will find the joy of Okavango embracing them.

Activities & Wildlife:

Throughout the year, game drives in open 4×4 vehicles are available, accommodating 7 guests at a time. There are two platform hides in the concession, for up-close viewing. During winter, the water levels around Tubu Tree Camp rise and the floodplains become covered with water (normally May to late September). This allows for a wide range of water activities from boating and fishing to mokoro trips.

Wildlife seen around Tubu Tree Camp includes elephant, lion, Burchell’s zebra, red lechwe, southern giraffe, tsessebe, and blue wildebeest on the floodplains. Kudu, impala, leopard and bushbuck are also seen in the forested areas. The variety of bird life is impressive, with dry-land species seen on the large islands and all the wetland birds seen on the floodplains and waterways.

Additionally, the nearby hide can be adapted into a Star Bed for campouts under the stars. This facility can house up to four guests, and comes complete with a long drop toilet. Fishing is another favourite amongst guests, where the challenge to use basic equipment to catch the fish is achieved and celebrated by releasing them back into the water.

Little Tubu

Location:

Built on the magnificent sands of Hunda Island and cradled beneath a grove of trees that look out over the banks of the river Little Tubu is the secluded bush getaway that travellers have been searching for. Here, intimacy and privacy are the focus, with a maximum of six travellers accommodated. The 3 authentic tents, of vintage design, are set atop timber platforms. Each suite has its own sundeck for surveying the landscape, as well as en-suite bathroom facilities and an outdoor shower to get even closer to nature.

The Camp:

The treetop pathways connect the tented suites to the main areas of dining room, pool and bar. Each of these are designed with an openness in mind, allowing the natural light, sounds and aromas to move through the camp, the dancing life-breath of the Okavango. In this elegant yet rustic abode, guests experience the wild in luxuriant comfort.

Activities & Wildlife:

With the variety of the floodplains and the forests, visitors will have the best of both worlds, seeing the semi-aquatic mammals of the plains and the leopards, lions and other predators of the forest. The same holds true for birdlife, as the contrast of wet and dry regions brings an abundance of species into the line of sight. Morning and afternoon game drives take a maximum of 7 guests on such adventures.

Night drives reveal the nocturnal habits of animals like the aardwolf and lesser bush baby, whilst the birding, boating and Mokoro adventures will gives travellers a new angle on the diversity of the region. The Hide and Star Bed will provide the ultimate sleep-out, where up to 4 guests can spend the night in thrilling proximity to the wild.
