Activities and Game Viewing

At Timbavati, the philosophy of conservation rings true in all efforts to take the land back to its authentic state of inception. For the discerning guest eager to learn about our various research projects in vegetation, animal diversity and soil erosion, there is no better place to sate your curiosity. For the adventurous, why not indulge in the thrill of a game walk with a well-armed ranger guiding you through the untouched terrain? Here you will meet the finer aspects of the flora and fauna of the area, learning about the eco-system in its finest details. For the purpose of safety, no children under 16 are permitted on these walks.

Game drives happen at dusk and dawn. These selected times are carefully chosen, depending wholly on the animal life’s movement schedule. Explore the 62 square miles of pristine wilderness in the kitted open Land Rover. From crocodiles tanning on the banks, to roaring lions and bellowing hippos, you will be captivated from beginning to end. Our highly trained rangers will guide you through your experience, answering any questions you may have over coffee and biscuits in the morning and drinks and canapes at dusk. A spotlight is on hand to facilitate your viewing of the nocturnal creatures when night falls.

Should you seek the solace of solitude, you can book a Private Safari Vehicle. Here you set the tone, directing your guide in the exploration of the magnificent reserve as if it was your own property. You decide when to go out and when to return to camp. This is ideal for bird-spotters and those passionate about photography.

The area holds the additional activities of helicopter flights over the majestic Blyde River Canyon, Golf at the Hans Merensky Course in Phalaborwa, hot air ballooning, elephant back safaris. Visits to the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre and Kapama Cheetah Breeding Project, where the wildlife have been rescued from poisoning, abandonment and injury are educational and touching.
