This award-garnering camp lies along the Zambezi River, within the fertile Lower Zambezi National Park. Kept fresh under the eaves of ancient Mahogany trees, Chiawa is as idyllic as it is peaceful. Family run, it is a place of 150 years of tradition, adventure, conservation and community, with the Cumings Family stamp of approval etched into every experience.
Whether you’re enjoying a meal in the refreshing, open space of the dining veranda, sight-seeing game in the viewing deck, or dining on a sumptuous meal in the lounge area, each of Chiawa’s facilities will meet your daily needs. Cool off in the swimming pool before drying off on the sundeck, where your eye can roam the land and its animals, unimpeded.
Each of the 9 Suites has varnished, timber flooring, exquisitely decorated for comfort, space and solitude. Elegant fabrics drape over a four post bed, swathed in Egyptian cotton linens, facing an open, panoramic view of the bush beyond your doors. Create your memoirs at the old mahogany desk, or unwind in the shade of your personal couch. Take your evening bath in full view of the mighty Zambezi River, where you’re bound to see hippos floating by. Or choose the privacy of indoor bathing, with only the sounds of the wild as your companion.
Tents 1 through 8 were designed with the intention of space, form and functionality. These face out onto the dry Chowe riverbed, where you can peruse footprints to tell the evening’s visitors to the camp. Here arm-chair game viewing is commonplace, with the areas animals constantly moving through the riverbed. Artisans reconstructed Tent 9 in 2010. It provides an unparalleled vista of the Zambezi River, exclusive dining area, a unique outdoor bathroom and a veranda with day beds. The first sight will leave you breathless, but as the evening unfolds and the lanterns are lit, the golden glow that casts out onto the trees, the deck and the pearl walls of the tent, will steal your heart away.
